Kira crossed the room to Gunderson. "Hey, Pavel?"
The young Chaser stopped chewing on his thumbnail and looked up. "Yes?"
"I don't suppose you have some tea? Making plans always goes a lot smoother over a proper cup."
"Oh. Of course." He rose to his feet, movements unsteady, then made his way to the kitchen area.
Kira gestured at Khefar. The Nubian stood in front of the coffee table to block the view as Anansi sat on the couch. "Do you have something other than Earl Grey? Maybe a Darjeeling?" he asked the male Chaser.
"I'll look." He took the kettle to the sink to fill it.
Kira cautioned the Marlowes to silence, then nodded at Anansi. The demigod took an earthenware vase off the table beside the sofa, then tucked it into his coat. For a brief moment his eyes flashed multifaceted blue. When he pulled his hand back into the open, she saw that he held a stunningly precise duplicate of the Vessel of Nun. In his quick-handed way he made the exchange, tucking the true artifact into his coat pocket against all known laws of physics.
The old man stood. "You know, Kira, perhaps I should skip the tea. I need to take the Marlowes back to get the rest of our gear."
"Good idea," Kira said as Gunderson rejoined them. "If we're going to help Gunderson take on Shadowlings and get his handler back, we need to be prepared. Khefar and I will stay here with Gunderson and come up with a plan. We'll see you guys back here in a little while."
They left.
Gunderson seemed relieved the others had gone. He managed a wan smile and looked at Kira. "Thank you, Solomon. I appreciate what you're doing."
"No problem, and please call me Kira."
"All right then, Kira." He sat on the couch, staring at what was apparently the Vessel of Nun sitting on his coffee table. "Hard to believe that Shadowlings would kidnap a Chaser's handler for some old jar they could have stolen themselves."
"That jar isn't just any old Egyptian artifact."
"Well, I figured it had to be special in some way, considering the trouble they've gone through to get it." He looked like a sullen teenager being grounded for staying out past curfew again.
"This amphora is called the Vessel of Nun," Kira said, lightly touching a finger to it. "How familiar are you with Egyptian mythology?"
He shook his head. "Not very. I'm more into Greco-Roman history."
"This is Nun," Kira said, carefully turning the urn so that Gunderson could see the image of the god on the amphora's surface. "He's the deification of the primordial waters of creation," she explained. "This is Satet. She's a fertility and flood goddess. In her hands, the Vessel of Nun is used to call Hapy, the personification of the Nile, who makes the annual flooding that brings fertile soil to Egypt. We're not sure how it works, but apparently the amphora can also be misused to cause drought or ravaging flooding. And if the Vessel of Nun were missing for too long or destroyed, the primordial waters of Nun would break free.
